How to Use Collagenase
SANTYL® Ointment

You should always follow the instructions you receive from your healthcare provider. Applying SANTYL® Ointment as instructed will help you achieve the best results.

Cleanse the wound site prior to application

Step 1: Cleanse the wound before application

  • Before applying SANTYL® Ointment, gently cleanse the wound with sterile saline
  • If a wound cleanser is recommended by your healthcare provider, follow it with a saline rinse each time you apply

Apply SANTYL Ointment

Step 2: Apply SANTYL® Ointment

  • Apply SANTYL® Ointment only to the wound or to a sterile gauze pad which is then applied to the wound and secured
  • Do not apply SANTYL® Ointment with your bare fingers. Your healthcare provider may suggest you use a sterile glove, gauze pad, or applicator stick to apply it
  • Apply SANTYL® Ointment to the wound area at about the thickness of a nickel
  • Carefully apply SANTYL® Ointment within the area of the wound

Maintain moisture balance

Step 3: Ensure a moist environment

  • If your wound is dry or hardening, your healthcare provider may provide instructions on how to moisten your wound when applying SANTYL® Ointment. Without the right amount of moisture, SANTYL® Ointment may not work properly
  • Do not use bandages or wound dressings containing silver or iodine because these substances may interfere with the effectiveness of the active ingredient in SANTYL® Ointment
  • Reapply SANTYL® Ointment once a day or more frequently if the dressing becomes soiled (e.g., as from incontinence)

If infection develops:
Be sure to talk to your healthcare provider right away if you think an infection has developed.

Don’t forget:

  • Never use SANTYL® Ointment in or around your eyes
  • Let your healthcare provider know if you have any ongoing side effects or if you think you may have an infection (redness, swelling, etc.)
  • Always use SANTYL® Ointment exactly as your healthcare provider instructs you
  • Do not use SANTYL® Ointment if you are allergic or sensitive to collagenase or any other ingredient in this product

Collagenase SANTYL® Ointment is indicated for debriding chronic dermal ulcers and severely burned areas. Occasional slight transient erythema has been noted in surrounding tissue when applied outside the wound. One case of systemic hypersensitivity has been reported after 1 year of treatment with collagenase and cortisone.
Use of Collagenase SANTYL® Ointment should be terminated when debridement is complete and granulation tissue is well established.
