Patient Frequently Asked Questions

All medicines have a potential for side effects, but most people can tolerate SANTYL® Ointment well.

A small number of patients may experience temporary redness when they apply the ointment, especially if the medicine comes into contact with tissue surrounding the wound. SANTYL® Ointment does not harm healthy tissue, but it is important to apply it only to your wound.

If a large amount of fluid or wound material builds up, you may experience irritation. If this happens, change your wound dressing more frequently until the amount of wound material or drainage decreases, and call your doctor. Let your healthcare provider know right away if you experience any ongoing side effects.

SANTYL® Ointment is a prescription medicine used to remove debris from chronic skin ulcers (such as pressure, diabetic, and venous stasis ulcers) or severely burned areas.

Make sure to apply the ointment only to the wound, and not the surrounding tissue.

Do not use products that contain lead, iodine, silver, or mercury. These ingredients may prevent the ointment from working correctly. Never use SANTYL® Ointment in or around your eyes.

Do not use SANTYL® Ointment if you are allergic or sensitive to collagenase or any other ingredient in this product.

Use this product only if it has been prescribed to you by your healthcare provider. Never share this medicine with another person, and use SANTYL® Ointment only for the condition for which it was prescribed.

Store SANTYL® Ointment at room temperature (no higher than 25°C or 77°F). As with all medications, keep out of the reach of children.

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist right away if you have any other questions or need additional information about SANTYL® Ointment. It is also a good idea to read the product insert every time you get a refill, to remind you of the right way to use the medicine.

Collagenase SANTYL® Ointment is indicated for debriding chronic dermal ulcers and severely burned areas. Occasional slight transient erythema has been noted in surrounding tissue when applied outside the wound. One case of systemic hypersensitivity has been reported after 1 year of treatment with collagenase and cortisone.
Use of Collagenase SANTYL® Ointment should be terminated when debridement is complete and granulation tissue is well established.
